Farmer's Market -- 7 June 2025 (Pitchfork Day, 20th of Meadows, Year 233)

Three quarts of strawberries, 3 pints of sweet cherries, a pint of sugar peas, locally grown brown rice, locally grown polenta, large soft pretzel, gruyere-bacon pastry wheel, lemon tart, fennel plant, dill plant, zinnia, cilantro, basil (all three plants given away by the local Master Gardeners group).

I guess I'm making strawberry jam this weekend.

As a long-standing fan of Alastair Reynolds who is finally getting around to watching Babylon 5, it's a bit like... so Mass Effect really just mashed these two things together (and sprinkled a bit of other sci-fi flavouring on top), huh.

Not a crime, of course; and I don't think Mass Effect has ever pretended to be anything but deep and affectionate bow to all things space opera. It's getting a rueful chuckle out of me nonetheless. O to get to file off those serial numbers so successfully.

Aiming to be social!

Back when I was a nerdy teenager, I was convinced I was an "introvert" (in quotation marks 'cause it's a vague term, but I think we're all familiar with it as a pop culture thing). Why? Because that's what media told me: you're nerdy = you're introverted.

However, as I grew into an even nerdier adult, I realized that's Very Much Not The Case. Can you believe that media lied to me??? 😱😱😱

Yeah, I really should have seen that coming, what with the Hymen Myth still being a thing and all 😅 But once I moved out to live on my own, it became pretty obvious I'm more the kind of super chatty person who's the last to leave the party and who gets super grumpy and up in my own head if I don't hang out with people enough for non-work-related reasons. I just happen to really enjoy writing too, which is hard to do in a group setting (for me, 'cause I'm so talkative 😆).

Due to overworking (both at work and otherwise), I've now been in a sour mood for days on end. I've gotten far too caught up in my own thoughts. Solution? I spent my breaks today scheduling future hangouts with all my local friends who have time to spare. My old roommate is coming over for lunch and/or dinner tomorrow (Sweden's national day, so no work), Saturday I'm attending a birthday party + DMing D&D, and Sunday I'm having dinner with a friend at her place, and I have orders to take pictures of her kids and send to my parents. And that's just this weekend. I have more social plans for the rest of June, and I already feel my mood improving 😊

Will also be playing more Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, 'cause it's a very cool game 💗💗💗

Anyone else have a similar kind of major self-realization you'd like to share? I'm oh so curious to know what else media has tricked people into falsely believing about themselves 👀

Btw, Sweden's national day has only been a holiday since 2005 and everyone I know is still pissed at that ('cause now we have less free days during Easter), so unlike many other countries, few people here in Sweden have any actual plans or traditions related to the day. I even keep forgetting why this specific date is our National Day 😅😅😅

bad scout

So, I sympathize with John Sheppard, because one time they took us to Joshua Tree National Park and tried to make me use a compass and a map and I got us so lost even the troop master couldn't get us found and we were 3 hours late getting back to the bus.

am I english?

people, I have heard many things about growing old: that it sucks, that it's not for the weak, that it sneaks up on you, but never have I heard it turns you English.

and yet, here am I: a lifelong coffee drinker and lover of the brew, yet recently I've started to crave...tea?

I know! yet slowly but surely, I more often reach for a tea bag than my trusty beans. it's a pure mystery!

so, having long since found my favorite coffee, I'm now on the hunt for the perfect decaf tea.

hit me with it, my fine tea friends!

John Sheppard lifts a cup to his lips and then makes a face and wiggles his tongue in disgust. The slight smile on Teyla's face behind him might indicate she monkeyed with his beverage.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 anyone?

My current stress relief is getting waaaaay too into a video game - a fairly popular one, so I'm dodging spoilers like crazy 😅

Anyone else playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 right now? I've reached Act II and am suitably emotional about what's happened in-game thus far 😭💖 Don't think I'm playing "optimally" 'cause I never was good at turn-based strategy games, BUT I am almost good at dodging and parrying, which is something at least 😆

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, here's the trailer (and a song from the game's soundtrack, 'cause it's neat):

Icons — Galaxy Princess Zorana

The game's not out yet; it's in kickstarter. But it looks really fun—a gonzo space opera setting, elective monarchy politics IN SPACE—the creator's several kickstarted games have all apparently came out when she said they would, and I did like Long Live the Queen a lot. So! Excitement. And icons.

it's getting bad people

Hostess Donettes claim to be "America's #1 Mini-donut" but I don't remember there being a nationwide referendum. Just another example of the rampant corruption going on right before our very eyes.

3 Weeks - 21

You guyssssss I felt a profound sense of satisfaction for completing the Three Weeks challenge and very much enjoyed my long weekend after an exasperating work week only to discover I had one post left! Oh noes!

Fortunately, [personal profile] runpunkrun and [personal profile] mific gave me something to post about! They did an awesome mcshep collab while I was away and what a treat! So awesome to have terrific art and podfic and story as one. Like the fandom days of old *sobs in old-timey*

It was a marvelous distraction from my usual hobby of staring in blank horror at the news. Speaking of which...

I beg everyone to please contact your senators about the Big PoS Bill! For too many reasons, but also because I just found out it includes sneaky provisions that completely undermine the judiciary, including *retroactively* making previous rulings and court orders unenforceable! Such as, oh, orders to return US Citizens and illegally deported immigrants from overseas gulags. The administration is angry at the lower courts for ruling against them, so they are trying to use Congress to render the judiciary impotent. See Section 70302 of One Big Beautiful Bill Act 119th Congress (2025-2026). Not to mention, of course, the bill raises taxes on the poorest, adds trillions to the deficit, drops the tax on gun silencers (what?), chops SNAP, medicare, and medicaid, and lines the pockets of the already wealthy with more and more tax cuts. I want to puke.

If you live the US, please CONTACT YOUR SENATORS and tell them you are so very against this Big Ugly Bill for more reasons than can be counted. Tell them to kill it or they will smell your vengeance come midterms.

Thanks, my friends.
